ABOUT
US
Dear Scooter
Enthusiast
Scooters
have been around for many years, with the 1956 NSU Scooter the
best example of the
modern
Scooter marking it’s acceptance in the North American market.
The Vespas on the
other hand,
is probably the most recognizable scooter manufactured today.
The basic design
has not
changed since the first one was rolled off the line is April
1946 by Enrico Piaggio.
But the
Scooter was never taken outside the major cities in
Alberta to
a great extend in
due
to the smaller engines used in the standard models
of the time. Most engines
were
only 50cc with a handful running at 125cc. They had great power
for the short runs, but
with the vast distances of the Alberta highways, a scooter was
rarely seen if never.
In 2002,
Suzuki introduced what was to be the first Super scooter to
North America. Although,
not new in
concept in the European and Asian countryside, the Super scooter
took the
advanced
design concepts of the Scooter and married it with the comport
aspects of the
Touring
Motorcycle. The Suzuki Burgman 650, with a 650cc twin engine
and automatic
transmission
is large in stature and introduced the North American rider to
comfort and the
joy of
riding a Scooter in the Canadian highways. Honda was to follow,
with the FSC600
Silverwing
in 2004, a sleek looking full size scooter, fast with great fuel
economy the Super
scooters are
different and make the average person take a second look.
I purchased
a 2005 Silverwing this year, and for the first time I discovered
the joy of just riding,
and not
upshifting and downshifting a behemoth of a motorized frame.
The Scooter is quiet,
and in the
countryside all you hear are the sounds of your front tires
rolling on the pavement.
With the
introduction of the Touring Scooter to Canada, it’s fitting that
the “Alberta Scooter
Club” is
introduced to the public this year, 2006 and will be the year
of organizing and
introducing
the club to the public, you, and we hope that it becomes a great
wholesome
club that
promotes safety, education and family unity to the riding public
of Alberta.
We encourage
you to join up and introduce scootering to your friends and
family.
Join us for
our
summer
rides, or
contribute with your own riding plans. We are an
open club, with the
yearning to
grow, and we entertain input from our membership.
Thank you
for visiting our website, and we hope to see you on the road.
Remember, Safety
before
Fun!
